So far this year, at least 31 web hosts and domain registrars (see list) have reduced prices or increased resource allocations. Here's a quick breakdown based on a few different parameters:

(a) 11 offers were limited time; 20 were permanent adjustments;

(b) 19 had monetary impact, 12 did not;

(c) 19 were available only to new customers, 11 were available to all customers; JaguarPC was the only company whose offer benefited just current customers;

(d) Only Netazen offered non-overage-incurring current customers any financial benefit.

If I look at these stats with my end user's hat on, I would conclude that bandwidth, data storage and domain registration fees must be getting cheaper by the minute. Unfortunately, if I stay with my current provider, the best I can hope for is an unneeded increase in resource allocations. Loyalty doesn't pay if I want a deal that reflects current market conditions.

Given the going price of AdWords bids, is it such a good idea to reward switching? Instead of offering new customers a discount during the initial months of their contracts, what about a reverse promo that gives long-time customers a better price after they've maintained their accounts for some amount of time?

The hosting service works fine, although we have a very low volume of traffic
(less then 500mb a month). Unfortunately, from time to time, every few days, our
email would stop arriving. We wouldn't actually loose any mail, but email would
be delayed by as much as an hour sometimes. We complained about this to
ixwebhosting a few times through their online live chat help. No resolution
came, even though I even contacted them at the moment when our email was NOT
working - so they could experience the problem as well during 'live chat' help.
Later I recieved an email saying that they tested our email, and that we have no
problem and that ticket has been 'resolved' (not!). Just like every previous
time. They know it is an intermittent problem and they check once in a blue moon
and based on that conclude that everything is fine. So email problems stay
unresolved. Too bad, it seemed like a good deal and a good place for one's
hosting needs.

Over the past decade, I've bought and sold many millions worth of online ads. When I ran ISPcheck, I had no real answer for prospective advertisers who wanted to know what results my customers were able to achieve. And when I became responsible for RackShack/EV1's ad buys, I found that there was no easy way to measure ROI.

All I wanted to know at the time was how many visitors from TopHosts versus TheWHIR signed up. But as I've subsequently learned from Ted Smith at Peer 1, I should have been tracking customers throughout their lifecycle. If my cost per sale from Site A is 20% less than Site B, but the average account gets canceled 50% sooner, B would be a better long term investment.

A couple of weeks ago I convinced Ben Gabler at HostNine to install StatCounter, the better to look up new customers and find out where they came from, and which parts of HostNine's website they visited before deciding to sign up. Banks are in business to loan money. European banks know this and generally have longer horizons. It will take a while before US banks figure that out again. (As a side note those short-term horizons and quarterly judgement days were a contributing factor.)

The one thing I am convinced from last weeks Hosting Summit, is that the data center and hosting sectors are fundamentally good, if not excellent.

We were hosted on 1and1 for over 2 years. I must say, the first 1.5 year was OK.
No major issue although some downtime from now and then. But the last 6 months
have been a real nightmare. Multiple outages, complete server failures needing
full mailbox restores (4 times), lost e-mails (corrupted new e-mails that could
not be recovered), you name it. We are switching providers ASAP. Two of my users
are currently receiving mail thru a POP server because their Exchange account is
still down (over 2 weeks now). I cannot recommend this hosting provider to
anyone. They have the best rates, but the worst uptime and support so its not

From the Hosting Summit - Dan Golding packed a lot of future in this presentation. However the one point most people keyed on was the growth of the Data Center and managed hosting industry.

Get this there is a 15% growth demand, and we are talking worldwide, but there is only a 5% supply ramp-up and this is probably through 2012

I think some clarification is in order. This become a real-estate capital tanking problem, yes some explanation.

First 15% demand. This year, next year and several years forward we need 15% more servers, or sq./ft, or power capacity (he thinks this is a trend) than we did last year. Compounding makes this interesting.

Supply ramp up 5%. That means we are building only 5% of our needs be it servers, sq/ft or power capacity.

As we are falling short in some ways – there is a tremendous upside for growth.

Real-estate Capital tanking – You may have noticed the Lehman Bros largest bankruptcy in the US history. Bankers are strange, now all real estate is bad.

Google screwed it up. They build that 500k-sq/ft data center here and there bankers think there is an oversupply.

Obviously someone needs to increase the supply – how about you?

Bottom line – good times could be ahead if you can convince the banker.
